The Road Before Us (Epic Epilogue)

Life can blow us off course, and we find ourselves sometimes in a strange world, a place where we come to realize that we really don’t belong here. We will leave; we have no choice. We do have a choice where we go, though, don’t we? What road do we choose that leads to our final destination? For me there is only one road, like Dorothy, who only had one choice at first.

Sometimes, before we can choose the right road, we have to get off the one we are on, it is dangerous and wants to kill us, separate us from our true destination. We cannot let that happen; we must hear the voice inside of us, that divine voice that wants the time we have left on this earth.

A comment was left under this clip, and I have to agree with it: This scene is so powerful. We never really see the crossroads we take in life, but here he is, consciously aware that whatever path he takes next will change his life from that moment forth. One of the best endings ever.

At the end of Cast Away, Chuck, our hero, was rescued from his lost existence, his cast-off and total separation from his life, and all that he loved. Not all was restored, however; he lost his job, his home, and his first love, who was the love of his life. He did get his car back, and so he climbed in and hit the road. To where? To What? He encountered his Guardian Angel, who helped save his life (with the help of some plastic “wings”). We don’t see what road he takes, but from the look on his face, we can make a very good guess.

There is a movie ending that makes me cry each time I see it. A great battle has taken place over the span of 72 hours, a battle on the very cold North Atlantic, the graveyard of the Atlantic, as it was known during World War Two. A first-time captain, from the bridge of his destroyer, Greyhound, has successfully, but at great cost to his ship, his men, and himself, shepherded a convoy of forty merchant ships and three destroyers, and hundreds of sailors and crew through a wolfpack of German submarines. He did it with no meals, no sleep, bloody sore feet, great courage, and much prayer. The battle is now over, sleep is overcoming him, and as he makes his way to his cabin, he hears a sound…..

What happens next? Where do we go from here? What happens to Chuck from Castaway, we don’t know. What happens to Frodo and Sam, that we do know because, like Rose from Titanic, the end of the story tells us. Our road is long, it is fraught with danger, love, amazement, romance, and we are not alone on our travels; we can have our own fellowship to travel with us. We have a story that tells us what can happen next to us, at the end of our road. Let us find out what that is. Let us find out together what the end of our story can be.
